For the sixth consecutive year, we are opening our doors to welcome the community and to showcase Chaudière Generating Station No. 2 – Canada’s oldest hydroelectric generating station in operation.
In 2015, more than 1,000 individuals took a guided tour of Canada’s oldest operating hydroelectric generating station during Doors Open Ottawa. Visitors learned about the station’s history and how hydroelectricity is produced.
Brought to the community by the City of Ottawa, the weekend is Ottawa's largest heritage and architectural event. Doors Open Ottawa gives visitors a rare opportunity to visit inside some of the city’s most prestigious buildings and facilities.
Originally built in 1891, Chaudière Generating Station No. 2 is Canada's oldest fully functional run-of-the-river hydroelectric facility. In 2001, the station was completely rebuilt. All of the generators were rewound, the turbines were replaced, the channels and dam structures were rehabilitated and the station was completely automated. All heritage elements of the station were preserved; with the equipment looking as it did 100 years ago.
