Over the following weeks, Hydro Ottawa will be moving forward with the completion of the cable and transformer replacement project that is underway in the Glen Cairn neighbourhood in Kanata South. This work is necessary to ensure reliability of electricity supply in the area.
Overall, this project includes:
- The installation of a duct system which will house the underground cables. This will minimize the requirement for excavation for future cable replacement projects;
- The replacement and installation of underground cables that are manufactured using improved insulation materials; and
- The replacement and installation of transformers that are more compact and that will provide safer and quicker operation for our powerline maintainers.
Finally, Hydro Ottawa will move forward with the reinstatement work and bring the project to completion once the above work has successfully been completed.
Starting July 6, and over a period of two weeks, Hydro Ottawa contractor Bradley Kelly will be removing outstanding backyard civil equipment, including five transformers and bases. While this part of the project is expected to impact 10 customers, it will not require planned power interruptions to be completed.
Resident may notice increased construction presence throughout the duration of the project, including excavation activities and construction vehicles.
Traffic control may be implemented when required to ensure that roads and driveways remain safe and accessible to residents and staff. To minimize noise concerns, we will ensure that the majority of the work is completed weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Once the civil work mentioned above has been completed, Hydro Ottawa will be moving forward with the replacement and installation of 13 new transformers, impacting a total of 150 customers. Planned power interruptions will be necessary in order to complete this work. As a result, power interruptions of 8-10 hours per transformer termination and cutover will impact 10-12 customers each time. Timing on this phase of the project will be communicated to customers ahead of time, once confirmed.
