High Performance New Construction

High Performance New Construction

Build above standards. It pays. Building owners and decision makers can receive up to $800 for every kilowatt saved by exceeding Ontario Building Code requirements when building or renovating.

Boost
well-being

Energy-efficient buildings can increase occupant satisfaction by up to 33%.

Enhance comfort

91% of tenants would prefer to live or work in a ‘green’ building. With improved air and light quality, and temperature and moisture controls, energy-efficient buildings allow for greater comfort and productivity.

Enjoy higher asset values

‘Green’ buildings command an average of $20 more per sq. ft. than conventional spaces. When competing for tenants, efficiency can provide a competitive edge.

Incentive Options

Engineered Incentives

This approach consists of a series of preset calculation worksheets that estimate reductions in peak demand and/or electricity consumption.

Lighting

Up to $400 for every kilowatt saved

or

$0.05 for every kWh saved during your first year

(whichever’s greater)

Unitary Air Conditioning

Up to $800 for every kilowatt saved

or

$0.10/kWh for every kWh saved during your first year

(whichever’s greater)

Custom Incentives

This approach bases incentives on modeled energy performance and offers more upgrade options.

For building owners

  • $400 for every verified kilowatt saved or $0.05 for every kWh saved below or equal to 10% above code;
  • $600 for every verified kilowatt saved or $0.075 for every kWh saved between 10% to 25% above code; and
  • $800 for every verified kilowatt saved, or $0.10 for every kWh saved for greater than 25% above code.

For design decision-makers

  • $50 for every verified kilowatt saved or $0.00625 for every kWh saved below or equal to 10% above code;
  • $100 for every verified kilowatt saved or $0.0125 for every kWh saved between 10% to 25% above code; and
  • $150 for every verified kilowatt saved or $0.01875 for every kWh saved for greater than 25% above code.

Modelling Support

  • Get up to 100% of the computer simulation costs for custom projects, up to $10,000.

Eligibility

  • Projects must be located in Ontario, comply with the standard 2012 Ontario Building Code (OBC) and be intended for commercial, institutional, industrial or multi-unit residential occupancy.
  • Your building must be complete by the end of 2020.

How to Participate

The application process includes three stages:

Stage 1

Submit your initial application.
Complete this step during the design stage, prior to acquiring permits.

Stage 2

Submit your application, worksheets or energy model.
Complete this step within 90 days of applying for your building permit, but before you begin your construction project.

After your application is approved by Hydro Ottawa, you can start and complete your construction project.

Stage 3

Submit your final application and worksheet along with your occupancy permits and other supporting documents.
Complete this step within 90 days of receiving your occupancy permit.
