Fall prep: the eco-conscious way

Now that summer is winding down and leaves are beginning to change colour, it’s time to prepare your home and cottage for the colder months ahead. To make things easier during this busy season, here’s a simple to-do list that focuses on energy efficiency, sustainability, and comfort.

  1. Seal drafts and insulate thoroughly

Check windows and doors for leaks, then apply caulking or weatherstripping where needed. Adding heavier, lined curtains also provides an extra layer of insulation to keep warmth inside.

  2. Give your heating system a seasonal check-up

Refresh your furnace filter and schedule professional maintenance if necessary. A clean, well-maintained system runs more efficiently and uses less energy.

  3. Keep vents open where you spend the most time

Direct warm air where it matters most. Partially close vents in seldom-used rooms, but never shut them completely. In multi-level homes, you may need to slightly restrict upstairs vents and keep basement or main-floor vents more open since warm air rises.

  4. Clean with eco-friendly products

Choose plant-based or natural cleaners like baking soda and vinegar for your fall cleaning. These options are healthier for your home and kinder to the environment.

  5. Unplug seasonal appliances and electronics

As you transition from summer to winter activities, unplug or shut off devices you’re not using. Smart power strips can also cut “phantom power” from electronics like TVs and chargers that draw energy even when turned off. Don’t forget to shut off outdoor water valves and irrigation systems to prevent freezing damage.

  6. Compost or mulch autumn leaves

Instead of bagging leaves for the landfill, compost them, shred them into mulch, or use them to insulate garden beds. These practices return nutrients to the soil and create safe habitats for pollinators and small wildlife.

  7. Install a smart or programmable thermostat

Automate your heating schedule to lower the temperature while you’re away and warm up your home only when needed. It’s a small step that can make a big difference in energy savings.

  8. Switch the direction of ceiling fans

Set ceiling fans to spin clockwise at a low speed in winter. This gently pushes warm air down from the ceiling, improving comfort without raising the thermostat.

  9. Swap out incandescent bulbs for LEDs

If you still have incandescent bulbs around, now’s the time to replace them with LEDs. They use up to 80 per cent less energy and last much longer—just in time for the darker months.

  10. Cozy up with blankets and sweaters

Keep extra throws and sweaters handy, and choose natural fibers like wool or cotton for warmth and breathability.

With a little preparation, you can keep your home or cottage warm, cozy, and eco-conscious as the seasons change and the colder months set in.
