Giving back is an important part of Hydro Ottawa’s culture.
As a community-based company, we have been, since our inception, strongly committed to making a positive difference in our community. Whether it’s partnering with community groups, sponsoring local initiatives or encouraging our employees to be involved in their neighbourhoods, our goal is to support our community.
Our continued work with organizations such as Christie Lake Kids and the United Way are important to our employees, who are encouraged to get involved in workplace charity events, and are offered one paid volunteer day a year. This creates a work environment where employees take initiative and pride in making a difference in the community in which they live and work.
Looking to continue to grow our community initiatives, Hydro Ottawa recently became one of Mealshare’s founding supporters in the Ottawa area.
Mealshare is a charity that currently operates in various major cities across Canada, providing meals to youth in need. Having launched in Ottawa this June, Mealshare is working alongside Operation Come Home to provide meals to homeless and at-risk youth.
Mealshare works by partnering with local restaurants who display the Mealshare logo next to select menu items. For every Mealshare item sold, Mealshare provides one meal to a youth in need. Since 2013, it has provided more than 800,000 meals.
Our employees will get the chance to see firsthand the impact this initiative will have on members of our community, with an upcoming volunteer opportunity at Operation Come Home, preparing meals for its members. Employee engagement initiatives like these, that foster innovation, open communication, and extensive community involvement and volunteer opportunities, are key to our company’s success. The pride that comes along with giving back is not only reflected in the work that is done but also in the workplace.
Our most recent employee engagement survey shows the impacts that giving back has on the work environment. Approximately 90% of employees citied the company’s commitment to the community and corporate citizenship are one of the top three reasons they enjoy working at Hydro Ottawa.
This is why community involvement and engagement will forever be at the core of Hydro Ottawa’s culture, because at the end of the day the biggest and sole reward of giving back is the realization that you’ve made a significant change in someone’s life.
