Become smart as a fox about electricity

Electricity is an important part of our day-to-day lives. It keeps our phones charged, our refrigerators running and our lights turned on. But it can also be very dangerous. Luckily there are simple rules to follow to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Join our friends, Felix the Fox and Sam the Squirrel, as they show you how to be a safety expert.

Knowledge is power

Planning a big dig in the yard?
Using a ladder for a high-up chore?
See a power line that has fallen down?
Trying to get a toy that's stuck near a wire?
Playing near one of those big green boxes?
Riding in a car that touches a power line?

Find out how to build an emergency kit so you’re ready for a power outage.

Six simple rules to stay safe

Don’t risk it! Here are six tips to keep you and your family safe from harm.

Look up

Keep yourself, your ladders and your kites at least three metres (about the length of a car) away from overhead power lines.

Stay away from fallen wires

If you see a downed power line, stay back at least 10 metres (the length of a school bus) and tell an adult right away.

Never touch a power line

Don't ever touch a power line with your hands or any object, like a stick or a pole.

Avoid electrical equipment

Those big green metal boxes and other equipment are for Hydro Ottawa workers only. Never climb on them or open them.

Stay in the car

If a vehicle you’re in ever touches a power line, the safest place to be is inside. Stay put and wait for help.

Call before you dig

Tell a grown-up to always contact Ontario One Call before they dig any big holes in the yard.
