Old Second Line - New Municipal Transformer Station

Old Second Line - New Municipal Transformer Station

September 2025 - November 2028

To ensure Ottawa’s north west region has the power to grow, Hydro Ottawa has initiated a Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) for the construction of a new 27.6kV municipal transformer station in north Kanata.

Hydro Ottawa is spearheading a lot of future planning (and innovative projects) to support growth and grid resilience, and to make the electricity system as sustainable as possible. The new substation will benefit and serve existing and new communities in both West-Carleton March and Kanata-North wards by providing redundancy against outages, effectively decreasing the size and frequency of outages for both urban and rural customers.

What will this project include?

The Old Second Line Municipal Transformer Station project proposes:

  • to construct a new 27.6kV municipal transformer station (MTS) at 1310 Old Second Line Road, on the east side, approximately 70 metres south of Thomas Fuller Drive; and
  • to connect the new power station to Hydro One’s existing 230kV transmission line located to the south-west of the station

As outlined in the project study area, the plan is to build the station in close proximity to the existing hydro corridor.

As part of our sustainability commitments, Hydro Ottawa intends to develop Old Second Line as a lower carbon substation.

We are currently undertaking a full project review of the station’s construction, including an innovative design, procurement and construction techniques that include using lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) materials, and equipment that will address embodied carbon associated with the construction and operation of the substation.

Why we are moving forward with this project

The need for new facilities was identified through the Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP) for the Ottawa area. Released in March 2020, the IRRP is a twenty-year plan that has been developed by a regional planning working group consisting of the Independent Electricity System Operator, Hydro Ottawa and Hydro One.

This project will serve existing customers and support projected growth in electricity demand for new residential and commercial developments in West-Carleton March and Kanata-North wards for many years to come. It will enhance reliability, reduce the size and frequency of outages, and provide redundancy to the area’s electricity system in the event of future extreme weather events.

The existing infrastructure in the area does not have the capacity to supply anticipated future demand in this part of the city.
