Carleton Heights-Rideauview Infrastructure Renewal

January 2026 to December 2030

Demand for electricity in Ottawa continues to grow and energy needs in the community are increasing. The Carleton Heights-Rideauview Infrastructure Renewal project is a multi-phase, multi-year initiative being completed as an essential requirement to upgrade the distribution system east of Fisher Avenue, specifically in the Carleton Heights-Rideauview neighbourhood. To ensure power is available in the community for customers now and in the future, we’re converting parts of our electricity infrastructure to increase capacity and replacing aging equipment.

This initiative is more than a single project; we’re prioritizing essential projects such as this one across our service territory as a core component of Hydro Ottawa's commitment to modernizing our entire electricity grid. These proactive, sustained investments ensure we can provide a reliable and ultimately more sustainable electricity supply for all our customers.

Why this project is important

The Carleton Heights-Rideauview Infrastructure Renewal is important to ensure that we can continue to meet the capacity and reliability needs of the community by upgrading the power distribution infrastructure. The project also focuses on mitigating equipment failure while creating redundancies, promoting a more consistent power supply.

What this project will include

As part of the Carleton Heights-Rideauview Infrastructure Renewal project, we will:

  • upgrade a total of 200 electrical poles
  • install 44 new electrical transformers
  • install approximately 32 kilometres of overhead primary and secondary conductors
  • install approximately 1.13 kilometres of underground duct structures, and 2.3 kilometres of new underground cable
  • install three new maintenance holes for our underground infrastructure

Coordination with the City of Ottawa

The City of Ottawa is conducting the Normandy Crescent and Valmarie Avenue integrated renewal project and the Integrated renewal of Arnhem Street and Apeldoorn Avenue project in the Carleton Heights neighbourhood. Hydro Ottawa is working collaboratively with the City to ensure both projects operate efficiently and minimize disruption to customers as much as possible.

How Hydro Ottawa customers will benefit from this project

By increasing the overall electrical capacity, we are creating a more reliable and power supply to match the growing needs of the community. This upgrade is essential to maintain the stability and effectiveness of the distribution system, leading to less disruptions and unplanned power outages. Additionally, the project replaces aging Hydro Ottawa infrastructure and equipment that have reached the end of their lifespan, safeguarding the safety and efficiency of the electrical grid.

This project is one of many future-planning projects we are spearheading to make our electricity system as resilient as possible.
