Planning outdoor work? Call or click before you dig.

As a homeowner, contractor, or developer, it is your responsibility to ensure that any outside projects are carried out safely. If you are doing any work that involves digging such as installing a fence, planting a tree or excavating for a pool, it is important to get utility locates before breaking ground to avoid hitting any underground infrastructure.

Underground networks of utility services including power lines might be buried on your property. Accidentally hitting one could result in serious consequences ranging from property damage, a power outage, or a serious and possibly fatal injury.

To book a free cable locate appointment, contact Ontario One Call 24/7 at 1-800-400-2255 or online at least five business days before they plan to dig.

Here are the steps you should take prior to starting a project that involves digging.

  1. Determine the area where you will be digging.
  2. At least five days before you begin digging, click or call 1 800-400-2255 to book the required cable locate with Ontario One Call. They are available 24-hours-a-day, 7 days a week.
  3. Wait for Hydro Ottawa’s cable locator and representatives from other utilities to arrive to mark the area. They will provide a summary of the locate results with the person who booked the appointment.
  4. Proceed to dig with care. Avoid digging within one meter of the marked ground.

Having utilities located before you dig is required by law under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (see Construction Projects 228).
