January 2025 - October 2025
Demand for electricity in Ottawa continues to grow and electricity needs in Kanata North are increasing due to planned residential and commercial development. To ensure power is available for customers now and in the future, we’re expanding our distribution system with the installation of new infrastructure.
Hydro Ottawa and our contractors will be performing a system expansion between Carling Avenue and Klondike Road, with work taking place on Herzberg Road, Terry Fox Drive, and March Road.
What will this project include?
As part of the Kanata North System Expansion Project, we will:
Install underground electricity infrastructure - specifically two kilometres of underground concrete-encased duct structure - in the road allowance, primarily along the boulevard and underneath existing sidewalks.
Construct eight new maintenance holes.
Install nine new hydro poles and three kilometres of electrical cable.
Why this project is important
This system expansion project will help to improve reliability in the area due to the increasing demand from both residential and commercial customers in Kanata North. This is the first of a multi-phase project to modernize and expand the capacity of the electrical system in Kanata North.
How this project benefit Hydro Ottawa customers
The Kanata North System Expansion Project will provide an increase in electricity supply to meet a growing demand for the area, provide redundancy to our system in the event of outages or extreme weather events, and improve the overall reliability of our system. This project is one of many future-planning projects we are spearheading to make our electricity system as resilient, and as sustainable, as possible.
